Dodgers snag strong starters in deal with Marlins, Braves
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The Dodgers have snagged several veterans in a just-completed three-way trade filled with prospects, per Yahoo Sports.

They receive starting pitchers Alex Wood and Bronson Arroyo and relievers Luis Avilan and Jim Johnson, as well as minor league utility infielder Jose Peraza from the Braves. They also get first baseman Michael Morse and starting pitcher Mat Latos from the Marlins.

The Dodgers sent several prospects to both teams. First baseman Hector Olivera, lefty Paco Rodriguez and starting pitcher Zachary Bird head to Atlanta while pitchers Victor Araujo and Angel Guzman go to Miami.

The keys are Wood and Latos, who will likely immediately join the Los Angeles rotation, as well as Johnson, who has been used as the Atlanta closer.

The 24-year-old Wood hasn't performed as well this season as he did in 2014, but he is 7-6 with a 3.54 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 119 1/3 innings.

Latos is 4-7 with a 4.48 ERA, but has come on strong. He has allowed just six earned runs in his last 26 innings pitched.

Johnson has nine saves, but will almost certainly be used behind Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen.

Diamondbacks, Braves announce three-player deal on Saturday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

The Diamondbacks announced that they have dealt right-hander Bronson Arroyo and Touki Toussaint (their No. 5 prospect) to the Braves in a three-player deal on Saturday. In exchange, the Braves will be sending infielder Phil Gosselin to the Diamondbacks.

Arroyo made 14 starts for Arizona in 2014 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He has yet to pitch this year, and is not expected back until at least August. The Braves will take on the entirety of Arroyo's contract, which includes $9.5 million for this year, and a $4.5 million buyout on a $13 million option for 2016, per FoxSports.com.

Toussaint was a first-round draft pick (16th overall) by the Diamondbacks in 2014. The right-hander has been pitching with Class A Kane County this year, posting a 3.69 ERA through seven starts.

Meanwhile, Gosselin underwent surgery to repare a fractured thumb in May. He is currently on the disabled list and holds a .325 batting average in 40 at-bats this year.

The Diamondbacks seem satisfied with the current state of their pitching corps, allowing them to deal away Toussaint in the deal.

"We are getting some good pitching from our young rotation and that's the direction we are going to go," D-Backs general manager Dave Stewart said.

Diamondbacks' Bronson Arroyo completes 'pen session Tuesday
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Diamondbacks pitcher Bronson Arroyo threw his second bullpen session in the past five days prior to Tuesday's game against the Braves at Chase Field, per MLB.com. His next step in his rehab will depend on how his surgically-repaired elbow feels a day after his mound work.

"It's can you throw and come back the next day and feel like you haven't thrown, not be sore, not be tender?" Arroyo said. "It's just going to be a gradual progress of trying to build that endurance up in the elbow."

Diamondbacks pitcher Bronson Arroyo still dealing with pain in elbow
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Diamondbacks pitcher Bronson Arroyo is still feeling a noticeable pain in his right elbow on the road to recovery from Tommy John surgery, according to MLB.com.

Arroyo underwent the procedure last July and is hopeful to return during the second half of the season at some point. Arizona has a $4.5 million buyout on Arroyo's contract at the end of the season, which is motivating his speedy recovery from the surgery.

"That's why I'd like to get back and maybe make 10 starts the second half of the season to show what I can do," Arroyo said. "That way they have some basis for making a decision."
