Red Sox finalize Lackey deal: Pitcher John Lackey has finalized a five-year contract with the Red Sox, a deal worth $80 million to $87.5 million. The top pitcher in the free-agent market joins a strong rotation that includes right-hander Josh Beckett, and lefty Jon Lester. GM Theo Epstein called Lackey a significant boost to the team. Lackey has a 102-71 regular-season record with a 3.81 ERA in eight seasons, all with the Angels. At Fenway Park, the right-hander is 2-5 with a 5.75 ERA in nine starts. The 31-year-old is coming off a strong postseason in which he struck out 14 batters in 19 2/3 innings for Los Angeles while allowing five earned runs and 19 hits.

Fantasy Analysis

If you can't beat them, join them. The Angels and Lackey have spent years losing to the Red Sox in the postseason (before finally breaking through last fall), but it led to Lackey getting a big free-agent contract with the Red Sox in the offseason. Lackey, the biggest arm on the free market, remains with a top contender with a great offense. He will still be a big winner in Fantasy and should be selected among the top 25 starting pitchers on Draft Day. The hype of an offseason move tends to overrate players, especially if you play in a league with a lot of Red Sox Nation homers, though. Lackey also hasn't been a picture of health the past two seasons, falling to come near 200 innings since setting a career high with 224 in '07, but we still project 200 innings from him since he won't have the weight of having to carry the staff. That falls on Josh Beckett or Jon Lester in Boston.
