Giants' Johnny Cueto: Will have blisters checked before start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Manager Bruce Bochey confirmed the Giants will recheck Cueto (hand) before Sunday to see if he is able to start, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Cueto is dealing with multiple blisters on his pitching hand that could ultimately force him to miss a start, though the 31-year-old remains insistent he won't require a stint on the DL. Bochy didn't rule out the possibility of calling up a starter to fill in for Cueto on Sunday, though he said the right-handed hurler is being dealt with on a start-to-start basis as of now. More should be known about his status for Sunday after he is checked out by team doctors in the coming days.

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Serves up three home runs in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cueto (4-4) pitched six innings, allowing four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in Tuesday's loss to the Cubs.

Cueto couldn't keep the ball in the park against the Cubs, allowing three long balls over the first four innings. Cueto hasn't been quite as sharp as he was last season - his walk and home run rates are both up considerably from last year - but his offense hasn't been helping him out much, either. The Giants have scored just five runs in Cueto's last four starts, with three resulting in losses for the righty. Cueto's next start is scheduled for Sunday against R.A. Dickey and the Braves.

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Dealing with blisters on pitching hand
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cueto admitted after Tuesday's start against the Cubs that he is dealing with multiple blisters on his pitching hand, but insisted that he will not require a stint on the disabled list, Andrew Baggarly of the Bay Area News Group reports. He allowed four earned runs while striking out eight batters over 6.0 innings in the loss.

Cueto didn't get much help from his offense Tuesday as the Giants were held to one run in a complete game from Jon Lester, but he was still hit hard by the Cubs. He surrendered a season-high three home runs in the outing and said after the game that the blisters are inhibiting his ability to get late life on his pitches. Baggarly added that Cueto intends to stay in his regular throwing routine, so there's little indication that Cueto is at risk of missing his next start Sunday against the Braves. Still, it'll be worth monitoring Cueto's progress throughout the week in the lead-up to Sunday's start.

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Loses rematch against Kershaw
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cueto (4-3) gave up five runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday. He struck out six.

Cueto handed Clayton Kershaw a rare loss with seven strong innings back on the first day of May, but the Dodgers' ace got his revenge this time around, cruising through seven scoreless frames. This has been a bit of an up-and-down season for Cueto so far, as his 4.50 ERA and 1.26 WHIP would imply, but he's really only had three unsavory starts out of nine. Keeping the ball on the ground has been a bit of an issue, as he's doing that at his lowest rate since his rookie season of 2008; in fact, his current 39.2 percent mark represents an 11-point drop from last year. Cueto obviously has a lengthy and impressive track record, so he should be able to adjust accordingly; there's no reason to downgrade your opinion of him just yet.

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Pitches well against former club
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cueto held his former team to two runs on five hits over eight innings Friday. He walked three and struck out six but did not factor into the decision in a 17-inning win over the Reds.

Cueto has looked like his old self of late, throwing four consecutive quality starts while posting a 2.86 ERA and 1.00 WHIP this month. An increase in walks (2.6 BB/9) and home runs (1.4 HR/9) have led to an inflated 4.15 ERA on the year, but the veteran has done a better job of limiting those categories recently and his ERA should follow suit. Cueto's next start is scheduled for Wednesday against the Dodgers at home, where he owns a 3.00 ERA compared to 4.94 on the road.
