Brewers reliever Francisco Rodriguez came in for an injured Jim Henderson with two outs in the ninth inning and got his first save of the season Friday night against the Pirates.

Rodriguez has not allowed a run over his first 3 1/3 innings since joining the team from Triple-A Nashville. The Brewers have not verified the severity of Henderson's injury. The Brewers could use Rodriguez in save situations while Henderson recovers from his hamstring injury.

Though Jim Henderson has been just fine as the Brewers' closer, some Fantasy owners might see the promotion of Francisco Rodriguez to the major-league roster as a sign that he could eventually supplant him. Should Henderson falter, Rodriguez could get a chance to handle the closer's job, but even if that remote possibility pans out, that doesn't mean that the veteran would thrive in his customary role.

Last season, Rodriguez notched a strikeout per inning, and his ERA would have been considerably lower than 4.38 if not for a 69 percent strand rate. However, Rodriguez relied on a higher rate of foul balls to maintain his K-rate, and meanwhile, his swinging strike rate fell from 13 percent in 2011 to 9 percent in 2012.

Unless Rodriguez can find a way to avoid contact at a higher rate, he could have a hard time maintaining a high strikeout rate. At risk of allowing more hits and runs, Rodriguez could be a very ordinary reliever this year -- and one not quite effective enough to hold down a prominent role.

The Brewers will promote reliever Francisco Rodriguez from Triple-A Nashville Wednesday, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. Wednesday marked the day Rodriguez could opt out of his contract if not promoted to the majors.

Rodriguez tossed four scoreless innings over four appearances between Class A Brevard County and Nashville. He struck out seven, allowed one hit and walked three.

The Brewers have promoted reliever Francisco Rodriguez to Triple-A Nashville, MLB.com reports.

The Brewers have to decide this week whether to bring Rodriguez up to the majors or release him. The three-time All-Star struck out four over two innings at High-A Brevard County.
