Nationals' Dan Uggla feels jitters on Opening Day
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals second baseman Dan Uggla admitted to being a bit jittery in the first few innings of the team's 3-1 loss to the Mets on Opening Day, crediting Mets starter Bartolo Colon for his work on the mound, masnsports.com reports.

"It was OK," Uggla said. "Opening Day ... everybody's always a little anxious and everything like that. Bartolo did a great job keeping us off balance. He's got some tricky stuff up there, but for the most part I thought we battled. We didn't get as many hits and runs as we would like to today. But there were some positives that we are going to take from today."

Uggla went 0 for 3 with a strikeout Monday, getting the start at second base with Anthony Rendon sidelined. The Nationals will square off with the Mets again Wednesday.

Dan Uggla makes it into Nationals' lineup on Opening Day
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Dan Uggla drew the start at second base for the Nationals on Opening Day against the Mets. Starting second baseman Yunel Escobar started at third base with Anthony Rendon on the disabled list.

Uggla, who won a spot on the Nationals' roster after a strong performance in spring training, is batting .167 (1 for 6) with no extra-base hits or RBI in his career against Bartolo Colon, who is starting for the Mets on Opening Day.

Dan Uggla, Xavier Cedeno make Nationals' Opening Day roster
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

The Nationals announced the 25-man roster for Opening Day, with infielder Dan Uggla and pitcher Xavier Cedeno earning spots.

Cedeno earns the final spot in the bullpen and will serve as the team's second left-handed reliever. Uggla, who has extensive experience starting for NL East rivals Miami and Atlanta, hit .261/.433/.457 with two home runs in 46 spring at-bats.

Matt den Dekker and Reed Johnson are also set to open the season with the team as reserve outfielders.

Nats' Rendon to open on DL after third opinion confirms MCL sprain
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Nationals manager Matt Williams said Wednesday the third opinion on third baseman Anthony Rendon's injured left knee confirmed the first two opinions -- a sprained MCL.

Williams said Rendon will continue to rehab the injury, but delivered the bad news that Rendon will begin the season on the disabled list. Williams said Rendon has a week-to-week type of injury, and sources told CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman that Rendon could be back in three weeks.

General manager Mike Rizzo did not put a timetable on Rendon's return.

“It's positive news,” Rizzo told Heyman. “All three (doctors) agreed. There's nothing seriously wrong, and it should remedy itself. Some turn the corner quickly and with other guys it takes a few weeks. But he will be fine.”

Yunel Escobar is expected to fill in at third base during Rendon's absence, which means Danny Espinosa will likely replace Escobar at second base. Dan Uggla could also be an option, if he makes the Opening Day roster. Ryan Zimmerman is not expected to move back to third base with Rendon sidelined.

Dan Uggla not interested in being bench player for Nationals
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Infielder Dan Uggla has had a strong spring and has a good chance of making the Nationals' roster. That's not enough for him, though.

Uggla had a procedure to improve his vision in the offseason, and he's hitting .278 with .922 OPS this spring.

"The way I’ve been feeling probably the last 20 at-bats or so, I’ve felt just as good, maybe even better than I’ve ever felt," he said, per Nats Insider's Mark Zuckerman. "I just want to keep working in that direction and keep doing what I’m doing and get better every day. I’m really, really happy with the way I’ve been feeling."

But the Nationals have a need for bench depth, and Uggla isn't interested in that role.
"I’d have to say no," he said. "I’ve never done it before. It’s not where I feel like I’m at in my career. That’s not what I’m looking to do."
