Royals' Jeremy Guthrie stays in rotation; Chris Young odd man out
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer

The Royals will make a tweak to their starting rotation as they aim to make another deep postseason run this year.

Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie (7-7) will keep his spot in the rotation, while Chris Young (8-6) will head to the bullpen as the odd man out, according to The Kansas City Star.

Neither have been especially sharp as of late -- Young has a 5.11 ERA with 11 walks and seven home runs allowed in his last five starts; Guthrie sports a 5.58 ERA with nine walks and five home runs allowed in his previous five outings.

Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie collapses in sixth in defeat to Indians
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie pulled a Houdini act early in his Wednesday performance in Cleveland. But he couldn't escape a disastrous sixth inning and the result was a defeat that evened his record at 7-7.

Guthrie finished having allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings with one walk and three strikeouts.

The right-hander gave up three hits and a walk and hit two batters over the first two innings, but trailed at that point just 2-0. But the Indians smashed six straight hits against him with one out in the sixth, including home runs by Giovany Urshela, Francisco Lindor and Michael Brantley.

"Guthrie was kind of classic Guthrie for the first five innings," manager Ned Yost said, per MLB.com. "He had a lot of traffic the first two innings, but limited the damage. He settled in the third, fourth and fifth. It just kind of fell apart there in the sixth."

Guthrie has been clobbered for 17 runs on 38 hits in his last 23 1/3 innings pitched and has raised his ERA to 5.65. His rotation spot could be in jeopardy in the wake of the acquisition of stud starter Johnny Cueto.

Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie ripped for four runs on 11 hits in loss
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie tied a season-high by allowing 11 hits in a 4-0 loss to the Astros on Friday. Guthrie allowed four runs over seven innings, walking two and striking out three on the evening.

Guthrie (7-6) allowed a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings, including a solo home run by Preston Tucker in the third.

All-in-all, it wasn't a terrible start for Guthrie, as he was able to limit the damage despite the high number of baserunners. He has a 4.96 ERA over his last six starts.

Royals' Jeremy Guthrie has mixed results in no-decision Saturday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie allowed three runs on nine hits over five innings against the White Sox on Saturday. Guthrie walked one and struck out three, needing 88 pitches to get through the fifth inning.

After the Royals gave him an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, Guthrie allowed individual runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to tie the game. The Royals rallied back however, earning the 7-6 extra-innings win.

Guthrie's ERA stayed idle at 5.36, but he has been somewhat better in recent times. He owns a 4.03 ERA with 17 strikeouts over his last four starts.

Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie picks up win in spotty performance
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer

Royals starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie picked up his seventh win of the season on Wednesday against the Rays.

Guthrie (7-5) tossed six innings, allowed eight hits and four runs. His command was spotty, though, as he allowed four walks and struck out just three batters.

Guthrie has a 5.36 ERA with 50 strikeouts and 28 walks in 95 2/3 innings this season.
