| Thompson makes an impact in first start: The Rays called up outfielder Rich Thompson on Wednesday and inserted him into the starting lineup on Thursday against the Red Sox, in the place of injured Will Rhymes. Thompson, batting ninth and playing left field, made an immediate impact, going 1 for 3 with his first career RBI, while also stealing two bases, as the Rays fell, 5-3. (Updated 05/17/2012) |

| Thompson, 33, stole 48 bases last season in Philadelphia’s minor-league system, so the speed is not much of a surprise. What is a surprise is that Rays turned to him to start a game so quickly, as he had not even appeared in a major-league game since 2004. He may continue to contribute as a fourth or fifth outfielder for the team, however he is not worth owning in any Fantasy formats. (Updated 05/17/2012). |

| May 17, 2012: After 1,388 games in the minors, Thompson makes a major-league lineup Rich Thompson played in six games with the 2004 Royals. He got one at-bat. Then he went back to the minor leagues, never to return -- until now. Needing outfielders, the Rays traded for Thompson on Wednesday. And on Thursday, manager Joe Maddon wrote the 33-year-old Thompson into a major-league lineup for the first time in a 13-year pro career. |
