Twins bullpen set after Caleb Thielbar sent down to minors
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

The Twins have optioned left-handed reliever Caleb Thielbar down to Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

With Thielbar heading down to the minors to start the season, Minnesota's seven-man bullpen will include Glen Perkins, Casey Fien, Brian Duensing, JR Graham, Blaine Boyer, Mike Pelfrey and Tim Stauffer.

Tim Stauffer no longer in the running for spot in Twins' rotation
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Twins manager Paul Molitor announced Wednesday pitcher Tim Stauffer has bowed out of the competition for the final spot in the rotation and will now focus on a move to the bullpen, per the Pioneer Press.

Molitor said Stauffer is "fine" with the move to the bullpen. Stauffer has made three appearances this spring -- all in relief -- but has not pitched well. He has allowed 12 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits and four walks in six innings. He has a 15.00 ERA.

“We will make a little adjustment with his routine, and he is going to get into more of a bullpen routine to prepare for something along the lines of that role,” Molitor said. “He was fine with that. Neil will change his schedule on how we’re going to be using him.”

Twins' Tim Stauffer feels 'a little sluggish'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Twins pitcher Tim Stauffer has struggled with production and velocity this spring, but he said Tuesday he's completely healthy and just feeling "a little sluggish," the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

"I just feel a little sluggish out there," Stauffer said. "Nothing hurts or anything. There’s no pain. Just a little dead-arm funk right now."

Manager Paul Molitor said Sunday that he and pitching coach Neal Allen would meet with the pitcher Tuesday to discuss plans for the final three weeks of camp, which could include Stauffer preparing for a bullpen role. Stauffer indicated that his lack of fastball velocity has caused him to use more offspeed pitches in games.

"Obviously everything is related to the arm speed and velocity," he said. "That’s all going to change when you get going the right way. Obviously it’s much more challenging working with half a deck of cards, so to speak. I’m staying positive and not getting overly concerned with the results. You know when your stuff is good. I know right now it’s not where it was last year and the previous year. I know my arm’s not where it’s going to be. Hopefully here in the next couple weeks I’ll get it ironed out."

Stauffer has surrendered 12 runs (10 earned) in six innings while striking out two and walking four this spring.

Twins GM Terry Ryan not ready to name favorite for final rotation spot
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Jim Souhan of The Star Tribune wrote in his Sunday column he feels Alex Meyer is the leading candidate for the final spot in the Twins' rotation. He mentioned it to Twins general manager Terry Ryan, who doesn't appear to have anyone atop his list yet as the favorite for the role of fifth starter.

“You’re ahead of yourself,” Ryan said. “There are people who are going to argue with you. There are other people out there who are going to compete for that job and believe they’re ahead of Alex Meyer, because of their track record and experience.

“One of them is Tommy Milone. He’s got a lot more experience than Alex Meyer. He’s got somewhat close to the same stuff. He’s won 13 games in the big leagues. He isn’t going to want to hear that … stuff.

“There are guys competing out there who want to send Alex Meyer back to the minors. Alex better realize he has to earn this thing. Which is a good position for us to be in.

Tim Stauffer is another guy. He had a good year in San Diego about three years ago. He’s no slouch.

Mike Pelfrey is a good man.  I’m hoping things turn for him. He certainly wants to earn his keep. He has a shot at the fifth spot, and if that doesn’t work out, he has a shot at the bullpen.”

Twins' Tim Stauffer open to any role
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Twins pitcher Tim Stauffer said it doesn't matter whether he's a starter or reliever, according to MLB.com.

Stauffer said he doesn't mind pitching in either role, though admits there are big differences. Mostly, he just wants to help out the team. "At this point in my career, I'm open to whatever the team needs," he said.

Stauffer added that his pitch mix as a starter has helped him excel in a relief role. Last seaon, Stauffer posted a 3.50 ERA over 64 1/3 innings. He started three games, but mostly pitched out of the bullpen.
