Jim Johnson earns win in extra innings Saturday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Athletics pitcher Jim Johnson earned a win Saturday by pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings while giving up three hits, walking two and striking out four in his team's 7-6, 14-inning win over the Marlins.

Johnson (4-2) loaded the bases in the 14th before leaving it up to another reliever to get the final two outs of the game, but he still came away with his fourth win of the year. Johnson owns a 5.14 ERA and 26:21 K:BB ratio in 35 innings.

Angels shopping for bullpen help
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

The Angels are looking to add one or two arms to help solidify the back end of the team's bullpen, with Padres pitchers Huston Street and Joaquin Benoit, Phillies pitcher Jonathan Papelbon and Antonio Bastardo and Athletics pitcher Jim Johnson of interest to the team, MLB.com reports.

"This is by far the most talent we've had in the bullpen since I've been here, the most depth -- we just haven't been able to figure out how to get it on a consistent roll yet," general manager Jerry Dipoto said, though he wouldn't comment on specific targets. "There are pieces here that are very functional in getting to a good bullpen, and I believe that we'll get there. But we are going to have to address some of that in July and help this group out."

The Angels have received spotty play from former ninth-inning man Ernesto Frieri this season, and they'd like to bring a southpaw aboard so that Hector Santiago has the flexibility to move to the rotation if needed. Expect the Angels to keep cropping up in reliever trade rumors over the next month-plus.

Report: Athletics shopping Jim Johnson
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The Athletics are trying to unload deposed closer Jim Johnson, according to Fox Sports.

Johnson lost his closer role early in the season and has continued to pitch poorly. He has given up nine earned runs in his last 8 1/3 innings pitched. The hope for a trade partner is that he regains the form that resulted in 101 saves with Baltimore the last two seasons combined.

Jim Johnson has dramatic home/road split
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

Athletics reliever Jim Johnson has been solid on the road this year, going 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA and holding opposing batters to a .200 average. At home he's been horrific. Johnson is 0-2 with a 14.04 ERA at the Coliseum, and opponents are hitting .465 against him.

"I don't know what the numbers are," Johnson told the San Jose Mercury News. "I have no clue. I don't think the numbers really matter."

Ranking the Athletics relievers
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Notice who got the save for the Athletics Monday? Nope, it wasn't Jim Johnson. He tried his darndest but couldn't record even an out in his second save opportunity since returning to the closer role. And Luke Gregerson wasn't the one to bail him out even though he hadn't pitched since Saturday.

No, Sean Doolittle got the save for the Athletics Monday, and given how easily he wiggled out of that jam, striking out two in a perfect inning of work, he could soon be in a position to do much for Fantasy owners.

While neither Johnson nor Gregerson are ideally suited for the role as pitch-to-contact types, Doolittle has electric, swing-and-miss stuff, piling up 26 strikeouts in his 20 innings this season. He also has yet to issue a single walk. And because the penny-pinching Athletics already signed him to a five-year deal just a few weeks ago, they won't have to worry about him taking a big saves total to the arbitration table. If he didn't throw left-handed, it would make too much sense.

If I'm ranking the Athletics relievers for the short-term, I go Johnson, Gregerson, Doolittle, but I have a hunch Doolittle comes away with the job eventually.
