  • Lester shelled by Rays: Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester was able to last just four innings on Friday against the Rays, as he was done in by a trio of home runs in the third and fourth innings. The first home run was a grand slam off the bat of Matt Joyce with two out in the third, with the next two coming in the fourth inning; a two-run blast from Elliot Johnson and then a solo shot from Rays' lead-off hitter Carlos Pena. Lester would record the next two outs before being pulled, finishing with seven earned runs allowed in four innings total. He walked three and allowed six hits, while striking out four, to raise his ERA to 4.72 on the season. Lester exited the game with the Red Sox down 7-1, earning the loss in a 7-4 final to drop his record to 3-4 on the season.

    Fantasy Analysis
Lester has largely been a disappointment this season, as his record has now dropped to below .500 through 10 starts. He is posting the worst strikeout rate of his career, with just 41 through 61 innings, or 6.05 per nine. He has consistently been above 8.50 per nine innings over the last three seasons, so there is some reason to be concerned here, as he is simply not missing as many bats as expected, which is leading to a lot of balls in play. He will face the Tigers in his next start, on Wednesday during Week 9 (May 28-June 3), a team that has underperformed offensively so far this season. He allowed just one earned run in seven innings in his last start against them this season, and should still be considered a quality Fantasy option despite his struggles.
