Twins starter Phil Hughes wins third straight start Friday
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Twins starter Phil Hughes (3-4) allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings Friday to take the win against the Rays.

Hughes gave up a solo home run to David DeJesus in the victory.

After beginning the season 0-4, Hughes has now won three starts in a row.

"Everybody has to step up and do their job. You can't really afford to have guys that aren't pitching well in the rotation," Hughes said of his slow start. "I knew I had to be better. Hopefully this puts me in a spot where I can continue to improve."

Hughes' next start is set for Friday in Chicago against the White Sox.

Twins starter Phil Hughes loses it, but wins it in Cleveland
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

A fine start turned into a mediocre one Saturday for Twins ace Phil Hughes. But he'll take his second win in six decisions.

Hughes was rolling along with five shutout innings and a 7-0 lead when the Indians started to tee off. A Michael Brantley RBI single ended the blanking in the sixth, then Hughes allowed two doubles and a David Murphy homer that made it 7-4. He was removed after a Jason Kipnis single.

"It's frustrating because I feel like I had good enough stuff and the ability to breeze through this one, but that wasn't the case," Hughes told the St. Paul Pioneer-Press. "I have to do a better job maintaining my stuff because we're not always going to have seven runs to work with."

The right-hander finished having given up four runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts. He has allowed 12 runs on 26 hits in his last 17 1/3 innings. He will try to lower his 5.11 ERA next Friday against Tampa Bay.

Twins' Phil Hughes gives up five runs in loss vs. A's
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Twins pitcher Phil Hughes picked up a win Monday despite giving up five earned runs on nine hits and two walks in six innings while striking out two in his team's 8-7 victory over the A's.

Hughes (1-4) had given up four runs or fewer in each of his first five starts, but it was in his worst line of the season that he managed to collect his first win. He served up a grand slam in the top of the first inning but was able to largely avoid danger after that, with his only other run coming on a sixth-inning solo home run. After the Twins ralled for four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 8-5 lead, Hughes was in line for the win for the first time in the game.

Hughes owns a 5.02 ERA and 28:4 K:BB ratio in 37 2/3 innings. His next start is expected to come Saturday against the Indians in Cleveland.

Twins starter Phil Hughes (hip) throws normal bullpen on Friday
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Twins starting pitcher Phil Hughes (hip) tossed his regular bullpen session Friday and is ready to go for his scheduled start on Monday, reports the Pioneer Press.

Hughes left his start on Wednesday with a mild left hip flexor strain.

Hughes is 0-4 in five starts this season with a 4.55 ERA.

Twins' Ryan: Phil Hughes (hip) will make next start Monday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Thursday that he's not worried about the injured hip of Phil Hughes and that the pitcher will make his next scheduled start Monday, MLB.com reports.

Hughes came out of his start Wednesday with a left hip flexor strain, but it appears the injury is a minor one that won't cost him any playing time. He gave up three runs in five innings Wednesday and is now 0-4 with a 4.55 ERA and 26:2 K:BB ratio in 31 2/3 innings.
