Royals' Drew Butera: Agrees to deal to avoid arbitration
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Drew Butera agreed to a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals on Friday, avoiding arbitration.

A post-DFA trade sent Butera from Anaheim to Kansas City in early May. He spent the final five months on the active roster behind the ever-durable Salvador Perez, making a mere 23 starts and finishing with a .198/.266/.267 batting line in 99 plate appearances with the Royals. Offseason acquisition Tony Cruz could take Butera's backup job in the spring.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez gets a break from the field on Sunday. Perez is in the starting lineup at designated hitter for Sunday's game.

It's Perez's second start at DH this year and first since June 30.

Replacing Perez at catcher is Drew Butera, who gets his 12th start behind the plate and second in three games.

C Drew Butera gets nod behind the plate for Royals
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer

Catcher Drew Butera will make his third start for the Royals on Monday since being acquired from the Angels, starting against the Yankees and hitting ninth.

Butera's last start came on May 14 and he's seen just two plate appearances since then. He has two hits in eight at-bats with the Royals.

Second baseman Omar Infante is the only Royals starter with experience against Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, with two hits in three at-bats.

Royals facing decision on backup catchers Erik Kratz, Drew Butera
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

The Royals will have to make a decision soon on what they will do with their backup catcher role, according to MLB.com.

Erik Kratz was pegged as the team's second catcher, even after the team acquired Drew Butera from the Angels. With Kratz currently on the DL, Butera has done well in his place, posting a .218 average with four runs scored this season. Manager Ned Yost will answer when he has Kratz available.

"I'm not going to answer those questions until Kratzie comes off the rehab," Yost said. "We'll make a determination then and do it like we always do. We'll get together as an organization and plot it out.

"Right now, we got two really good options and we have to decide the best option."

Yost really likes the defense Kratz brings to the plate.

"Butera's defense is really good. Kratzie's offensive capabilities, mostly his power, is very, very good," Yost said. "Butera's offense is good and he understands situations to do what you want your backup catcher to do -- he can bunt, go the other way, move runners. You got a runner on third base and [Butera] will find a way to get him in."
