Gonzo retires, joins Arizona front office: A teary Luis Gonzalez announced his retirement as a player Saturday and rejoined the Arizona Diamondbacks as a special assistant in the front office. In his new role, "Gonzo" will assist Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall and other departments throughout the organization. Gonzalez was with the Florida Marlins last season and finished his 18-year career with 354 home runs and 2,591 hits. The five-time All Star also played for the Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Gonzalez, who turns 42 on Thursday, played for Arizona from 1999-2006 and is best known for his ninth-inning RBI single that beat the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. He is Arizona's career leader in home runs (224), RBIs (774), runs (780), hits (1,337), doubles (310), on-base percentage (.391) and slugging percentage (.529). No player has worn Gonzalez's No. 20 since he left the Diamondbacks and team officials indicated it could be retired in the future.
