Benitez looks good in comeback: From The Sports Xchange: Former star closer Armando Benitez, who has nearly 300 major league saves in his career, signed a minor-league contract with the Astros after going 1-0 with 16 saves and a 2.86 ERA with Newark of the Independent League. Benitez, who was 40-47 with 289 saves and a 3.13 ERA from 1994 through 2008, was scouted recently by former Astros infielder Enos Cabell, a special assistant to GM Ed Wade. "Enos reported that Armando was in very good shape and was throwing well," Ed Wade said. "Tim Raines, who is managing the Newark club, believes that Benitez is highly motivated to get back to the big leagues. We'll give Armando a chance to finish the season at Round Rock and then determine where we go from there."

Benitez, 36, will report Monday to Triple-A Round Rock, where he'll be evaluated further for consideration for the major league club. "The main thing is he was throwing 91 to 95-mph and he was getting out everybody that he pitched against and he lost 25 pounds," Cabell said. "He looks fantastic. He really looked good. You wouldn't have recognized him. I really like him. He was a gentleman and Tim Raines recommended him, too. He's running the stairs. I think he'll help the young kids on our team, too. I like him." Benitez has made over 762 career relief appearances in the majors. Consider him nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men, if he is called up in September.
