Before the birth of the World Series in 1903, there were other
postseason championships which took place as early as 1884.
Although they are not officially recognized as part of World
Series history, they provided a basis for the establishment of
what has become recognized as 'The Fall Classic.' The World Series
has produced some magical moments. How about Kirk Gibson's home
run in Game 1 to help the Dodgers shock the A's in 1988 (right)?
Or 'The Catch' by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series? Catch all
the World Series history.
The League Championship began in 1969. The LCS went from a
five-game series to a seven-game series in 1985. This round has
seen some of the more thrilling and heart-pounding moments in
postseason play. How about Sid Bream scoring on a close play to
end Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS and help the Braves beat the Pirates?
Or Dave Henderson's home run (right) after the Red Sox were down
to their last strike in the 1986 ALCS at California? Check out all
the League Championship Series history.
The Division Series began in 1995. The AL has witnessed two Game
Fives while the NL has seen six sweeps out of eight series. The
Division Series has only been in existence for four seasons, but
has seen its share of great moments. How about Ken Griffey's mad
dash to home plate to beat the Yankees in the 1995 AL Division
Series? Or Gary Sheffield limping home with the winning run in
Game 1 of Florida's 1997 NL Division Series against San Francisco
(right)?
