LOS ANGELES -- Know what would be more entertaining than free gasoline night at the ballpark?

If San Francisco's Giant took the advice of Hall of Famer Bob Feller.

"If I'm Barry Bonds, I'd have an open (performance-enhancing drug) test, right now, in front of the news media," Feller was saying the other day.

Yep, and if they gave away vacation packages to Hawaii each time you or I ran a yellow light, we'd all be having terrific summers.

"If I knew a fellow was taking steroids or cheating, I don't want him in the Hall of Fame," Feller said. "I wouldn't want him here.

"I wouldn't shake his hand and welcome him here."

Intriguing thing? Cranky as Feller often is about any number of subjects, he intentionally left the dots unconnected between the above statement and the man currently taking aim at Hank Aaron's record 755 career homers.

"If Barry Bonds breaks Hank Aaron's record, so be it," Feller said. "I'm all for it. It could be good for baseball.

"Now if he's caught using steroids, or if he lied to the jury, or if he was cheating on his taxes, he won't get the numbers (to gain entry into the Hall of Fame)," Feller said.

If, if, if.

They extend all the way to upstate New York. I know. I spent part of my time in Cooperstown over the weekend quizzing current Hall of Famers whether they're as angst ridden -- or as downright pissed -- as a large percentage of fans.
