MILWAUKEE -- Former All-Star catcher Ted Simmons was hired as bench coach for the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, with Dale Sveum returning to his role as third-base coach.

Sveum replaces Nick Leyva, who was let go at the end of the season.

Simmons, who played for Milwaukee and was a key member of the Brewers' last postseason team in 1982, has worked in the front office before but has never been a coach.

Simmons worked for St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and San Diego from 1988-2007 in a variety of roles. He was the Pirates' general manager from 1991-92 and vice president of baseball operations for the Padres from 1999-2001.

Brewers manager Ned Yost backed up Simmons in the 1982 season, and Simmons hit two home runs in the 1982 World Series.

Simmons played 21 major league seasons with St. Louis (1968-80), Milwaukee (1981-85) and Atlanta (1988). An eight-time All-Star, Simmons hit .285 with 248 home runs and 1,389 RBI in 2,456 career games.
