News briefs: Padres' Estes returns to majors after Tommy John surgery

ATLANTA -- The San Diego Padres placed right-handed pitcher Kevin Cameron on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow sprain and purchased the contract of left-hander Shawn Estes from Triple-A Portland on Thursday.

Cameron suffered the first-degree sprain while throwing only three pitches in relief in Tuesday's game against Atlanta.

Estes was 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA in six starts for Portland.

"I think he's best suited to start, but we'll see how it plays out," said manager Bud Black before Thursday's game.

Black said Estes would be in the bullpen for Thursday's game against the Braves.

Estes made his last major league appearance for San Diego in 2006, when he was 0-1 with one start. Estes, who missed the 2007 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, was 7-8 with a 4.80 ERA in 21 starts for Arizona in 2005. Full story

Braves activate Infante for '08 debut

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves activated infielder Omar Infante from the disabled list and placed catcher Brayan Pena on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained back.

Infante, acquired in an offseason trade with the Chicago Cubs, was in Thursday's starting lineup against San Diego as the starting second baseman and leadoff hitter.

Infante opened the season on the DL with a broken right hand and was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI for Triple-A Richmond on Wednesday. In three games during an injury rehabilitation assignment with Richmond, Infante hit .364 (4-for-11) while playing in center field.

Fill-in closer loses save day after game

ATLANTA -- Manny Acosta lost a save when an official scorer realized he mistakenly awarded one the previous night following the Atlanta Braves' 5-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

Acosta, the Braves' fill-in closer with Rafael Soriano on the disabled list, entered with a 5-2 lead Wednesday after Will Ohman got the first out of the ninth inning. Acosta retired Callix Crabbe and Khalil Greene to end the game.

Braves official scorer Jack Wilkinson awarded Acosta his third save, and the save was included on the box score and postgame report.

Braves lose pitchers Reyes, Carlyle during game

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Braves left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes left against San Diego after developing a blister on his left index finger.

Reyes, making his second start of the season, gave up five hits and two runs in 2 2/3 innings. He was removed in the third inning after issuing his second walk.

Buddy Carlyle relieved Reyes but left in the fifth inning following a first-base collision with Kevin Kouzmanoff. Carlyle fielded a grounder and tagged Kouzmanoff about halfway down the first-base line as Kouzmanoff's left thigh hit Carlyle's head.

Indians send Michaels to Pirates

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired outfielder Jason Michaels and cash from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named.

Michaels was designated for assignment Tuesday after hitting .207 with no home runs and nine RBI in 21 games this season.

"We had a chance to get an established major league player, albeit one that is struggling a little bit this year," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. "But he's a guy who brings a veteran presence to the clubhouse and can legitimately play left and right field."

Michaels is a career .277 hitter with 37 homers and 203 RBI in 632 games. The 32-year-old was in his third season with Cleveland after being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1998 and making his debut with them in 2001.

Braves' Moylan to miss season

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Braves reliever Peter Moylan will miss the rest of the season after having elbow-ligament replacement surgery.

Dr. James Andrews operated on Moylan's right elbow in Birmingham, Ala., after finding a bone spur had broken off and compromised the ligament, Braves spokesman Brad Hainje said.

Moylan opened the season as the setup man to closer Rafael Soriano, who is on the disabled list with a sore elbow. Moylan was 0-1 with one save and a 1.59 ERA this season.

Lo Duca to go on DL

HOUSTON -- Washington Nationals catcher Paul Lo Duca will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a broken right hand.

Lo Duca broke the fourth metacarpal bone in his hand while batting in the seventh inning against Houston on Wednesday night. He just came off the DL last Friday after he was hit by a pitch and bruised the same hand on April 13.

Nationals manager Manny Acta said Lo Duca could be out four to six weeks.

Lo Duca said he might have come back from the earlier injury too quickly.

"Obviously, it was there before," he said. "When we took the X-ray the first time, it might've been a little too swollen to see it. I gave it time, it was getting better, but the more work I put in, it was starting to get sorer and sorer."

Eckstein placed on DL

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays placed shortstops David Eckstein and John McDonald on the 15-day disabled list, two days after both were injured in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Utilityman Joe Inglett was promoted from Triple-A Syracuse, with another roster move likely before Friday's game at Cleveland.

"By tomorrow we'll have something, either internally or externally," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. "It's all pending a couple of things that I can't say right now. We've got some irons in the fire. Hopefully we'll be able to see it through. If not, we'll have to go to Plan B."

Inglett appeared in 12 games for Toronto earlier this season, batting .303 with no homers and four RBI.
