LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers placed backup catcher Gary Bennett on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of plantar fascitis in his left foot and purchased the contract of catcher Danny Ardoin from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Pitcher Jason Schmidt was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room for Ardoin on the 40-man roster. Schmidt is working his way back from shoulder surgery last season. The right-hander has made only six starts for the Dodgers since signing a three-year, $47 million contract in December 2006. His last one was June 16, 2007, four days before his surgery.

Bennett has four hits and four RBI in 21 at-bats in the 10 games he's played this season. One of the hits was a home run.

Ardoin, who turns 34 in July, signed as a free agent in December. He will be playing for his fifth big league team after appearing in a combined 141 games with Minnesota, Texas, Colorado and Baltimore. It's his 14th season in professional ball.
