Braves' Jones held out with quadriceps injury

ATLANTA -- Braves third baseman Chipper Jones wasn't going to play Sunday due to a small tear in his right quadriceps and may miss one or two more games.

Jones, leading the majors with a .420 batting average, injured the muscle on April 9 in Colorado and felt more soreness as the Braves' road trip continued.

Jones had to leave an April 20 game in Atlanta after irritating the injury but started the next day.

"I won't do anything today or tomorrow," he said. "I'll see how it feels after the off day. ... I'll probably miss a day or two in Chicago."

Jones said Sunday he felt pain again in the area while running to first on a ground ball in the seventh inning of Saturday night's 6-2 loss to Philadelphia.

Jones said team physician Dr. Marvin Royster could feel the tear and said there was some bleeding in the area. No MRI or X-ray was planned, Jones said.

"I can still swing the bat," he said.

The Braves are off Monday before beginning a series at the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

Jones was 1-for-3 with his 15th homer, a two-run shot, in Saturday night's loss.

Omar Infante was listed as the Braves' starting third baseman for Sunday's final game of a three-game series against the Phillies. Yunel Escobar, normally the leadoff hitter, moved to Jones' usual No. 3 spot in the batting order.
