A-Rods near miss makes Shea shiver

"OMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGOOOOOOD!!!!!!!"

There was no way of knowing if that was Met fans or Yankee fans, and in truth it hardly mattered, because the sound of the bat was pure, and the ball was high, and . . .

"Endy's got a bead on it!" a Mets fan yelped, and he couldn't have sounded more relieved if he had ever been forced to say, "Wait, my house isn't really on fire!"

The Yankees fans held out hope. But they're New York baseball fans. They know to look to the outfield for assistance. This ain't Cincinnati, pal.

"All I knew," Chavez would say, "was that I was playing so deep it was gonna have to be out for me not to catch it." "I've given up enough of 'em to know the difference," Wagner said. "I jammed him. Pretty funny, though, guy hitting a jam shot to the warning track, eh?"

A-Rod had more hope but, then, when you live A-Rod's life you're always safe playing the optimist.

"I thought it had a chance, I did," he said. "But I knew I hadn't gotten all of it."

He hadn't. The Mets won, the Yankees lost, they go back to their respective corners now and resume their respective races, the lasting image of this four-game weekend split the biggest image in all of New York baseball: A-Rod At The Bat.

Must-see baseball at its finest.
