Yankees pitchers Bruney, Hughes make progress in rehab stints

TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees reliever Brian Bruney allowed one run and two hits over two innings in his first minor league rehab appearance Friday since hurting his right foot in April.

It was first thought Bruney would need season-ending surgery to repair a torn ligament in the foot, but the right-hander opted to rehab the injury after consulting several specialists.

"I think I made the right decision," Bruney said. "Only time will tell. The foot felt good. My arm felt great, so I'm excited."

He struck out three and walked one in a Gulf Coast League game against Detroit minor leaguers. He retired six of his last seven batters after allowing the first three to reach base.

Before Bruney twisted his foot covering first on April 22, he was 1-0 with one save and a 1.59 ERA this season. He had to cover first once in Friday's game.

Also, right-hander Phil Hughes, who was placed on the disabled list with a broken rib April 30, threw 90 feet on level ground. He hopes to throw off a mound in the next week or two.
