NEW YORK - The Red Sox' 7-0 shutdown of the Yankees did not goover real well in the home clubhouse last night.
After the game, manager Joe Girardi held a closed-door meetingwith the Yanks, lambasting them for an unacceptable performanceafter falling behind early. The doors of the clubhouse, usually open10 minutes after a game, stayed shut for 26 minutes.
The Yankees have now lost 4-of-5, including 3-of-4 in the Bronx.
They went 0-for-10 with runners on base. They grounded into threedouble plays. And for the fourth time in their last six games, theyhad five-or-fewer hits.
"It's embarrassing for a team like this," Johnny Damon said."We're getting shut out almost every other day. Once we got down,it's like there was nothing there.
"They handed it to us tonight and they made it look easy. It wasembarrassing."
Andy Pettitte lost his first game since May 17, ending a streakof eight without a loss. It was only the Sox' second victory againstthe lefty in their last nine tries.
Reliever Mike Timlin returned from the disabled list (left kneetendinitis) hoping the struggles that plagued him earlier in theseason are a thing of the past.
"I felt like I was throwing the ball the way I should," the right-hander said of his three-game rehab stint for Triple-A Pawtucket, during which he retired all nine batters he faced, striking outthree.
Added manager Terry Francona: "The reports were as good as thenumbers.
Before he was placed on the DL, the 42-year-old Timlin (3-3, 7.06ERA) had allowed six earned runs and 10 hits in only 6 2/3 inningsspanning his last seven games.
His return also was notable since it came the day after thebullpen allowed four runs in the seventh inning of a 7-6 loss atTampa Bay.
