White Sox place Contreras on DL; Guillen disappointed

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox placed Jose Contreras on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday and recalled right-hander D.J. Carrasco from Triple-A Charlotte.

Contreras is 7-6 with 4.60 ERA in 19 starts, but is 1-3 in his last seven starts with a 8.60 ERA. In his last start on July 13 at Texas, he allowed seven runs and 10 hits in four innings. He was put on the disabled list retroactive to July 18.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said he thought that Contreras should have been more upfront with his injury.

"I wasn't too pleased the way he handled the situation because he didn't let (team trainer) Herm (Schneider) know, he didn't let myself or (pitching coach Don) Cooper know about it and he was continuing to pitch that way," said Guillen. "I don't want any of my players go out there with any kind of pain and try to be a hero. I don't want to say I was upset, but I was a little disappointed when one of my players is hiding stuff from us for no reason."

In a recent bullpen session, Contreras said he couldn't throw his splitter and slider.

Guillen is unsure who will take Contreras' spot in the rotation on Tuesday against Texas, but is leaning toward Nick Masset and Carrasco.

Carrasco was 2-1 with a 2.88 ERA with Charlotte in eight games this season. He pitched four innings of relief for the White Sox on July 11 at Texas.
