AL roundup: Tigers complete sweep of Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Armando Galarraga carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 7-1 Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep.

Galarraga retired the first 18 batters before David DeJesus led off the seventh with a single to right on a full-count pitch. To that point, the 26-year-old rookie right-hander had allowed just two fly balls to the outfield and struck out six.

He wound up allowing a run in the seventh on three singles and a walk, but left the bases loaded. Galarraga (8-4) was replaced by Casey Fossum in the eighth, after lowering his ERA to 3.27 while striking out a career-high seven against just one walk.

The Tigers outscored the Royals 33-6 in the three-game series.

Cabrera drove in three runs with a pair of singles, raising his RBI total to 10 for the three-game series and 71 for the season. Magglio Ordonez added three hits and a couple RBI, while Placido Polanco had three hits and scored twice.

The Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings off Zack Greinke.

The Royals right-hander gave up five runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out eight in six innings. Greinke (7-7) is 0-3 in five starts since a June 24 victory over Colorado. Full story

Angels 14, Indians 11

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jeff Mathis had four hits with a career-high six RBI, including his first grand slam in the majors, and Casey Kotchman had a career-best five hits for the Los Angeles Angels in a victory over the Cleveland Indians.

The Angels padded their AL West lead to 10 games over Oakland with a season-high 19-hit attack that included four hits by Howie Kendrick, who equaled a franchise record with three doubles. He also drove in three runs and scored three times.

It was the first time in Angels history that three players each had four or more hits in the same game. Mathis added a two-run double in the sixth and Kendrick capped the Angels' scoring binge with a two-run single in the seventh.

John Lackey (8-2) allowed six runs and eight hits over five innings, but was able to call it quits with a 10-6 lead after his teammates scored five runs in the fifth. The six runs were the most allowed by Lackey in any of his 77 career victories. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 7.60 ERA in his last four starts, after allowing no more than two earned runs in eight of his previous nine outings this season.

Blue Jays 2, Orioles 1 (6 inn., susp.)

BALTIMORE -- The game between Toronto and the Baltimore Orioles on was suspended by rain with the Blue Jays leading in the sixth inning.

Play will resume Thursday afternoon with two outs in the top of the sixth. The teams will then play the finale of the four-game series.

Toronto went up 2-1 in the sixth, moments before a thundershower stopped play. Alex Rios led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Lyle Overbay. Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie then got two outs before the rain came.

After a delay of more than 1 ½ hours, the game was suspended. A.J. Burnett allowed one run and six hits in five innings for Toronto. He struck out seven and walked none. Unbeaten in six starts since June 12, Guthrie also gave up six hits.
