News briefs: BoSox option Bowden after rookie wins major league debut

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox optioned Michael Bowden to Triple-A Pawtucket one day after he won his major league debut and recalled outfielder Jonathan Van Every from their top farm club Sunday.

Bowden gave up two runs and seven hits over five innings in Boston's 8-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night. The right-hander was the third pitcher to make his major league debut in a starting role for the Red Sox this season, following Justin Masterson and Charlie Zink.

With first baseman Kevin Youkilis and center fielder Coco Crisp out sick Sunday, the Red Sox recalled Van Every to add some depth for their game against the White Sox.

Van Every has 26 homers, 70 RBI and a .263 batting average in 119 games with Pawtucket. He was 1-for-3 in his only game this season with Boston at Baltimore on May 14.

ChiSox recall reliever Logan

BOSTON -- Chicago recalled reliever Boone Logan from Triple-A Charlotte.

Logan was optioned to Chicago's top farm club on Aug. 10 after a 12-game stretch in which he yielded 17 earned runs in eight innings. The left-hander is 2-3 with a 5.36 ERA in 48 games with the White Sox this season.

Logan was 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in nine innings over five games with the Knights.

Logan takes the roster spot of right-hander Lance Broadway, who was optioned to Charlotte on Saturday night.

Rays deal for Indians minor leaguer

CLEVELAND -- The Indians traded minor league infielder Jorge Velandia to the Rays for cash.

The 33-year-old Velandia was at Triple-A Buffalo after playing briefly for the Blue Jays and Indians earlier this year. He hit .209 with eight RBI in 52 games with the Bisons.

Velandia played for Tampa Bay last year, batting .320 with the only two home runs of his career and 11 RBI in 14 games. Velandia, who also has played for San Diego, Oakland and the New York Mets, has a .189 batting average and 23 RBI in 174 career games.

He went 0-for-7 in three games for Toronto in May, was released and signed with Cleveland in June, going 3-for-8 (.375) in seven games before being sent down. Because the AL East-leading Rays acquired Velandia before Sept. 1, he is eligible for their postseason roster if they make the playoffs.

Cincy demotes righty Ramirez

CINCINNATI -- The Reds optioned right-hander Ramon Ramirez to Class A Sarasota, less than a day after he been called up and made his major league debut with seven effective innings against the Giants. The Reds recalled utility player Wilkin Castillo from Triple-A Louisville.

The 25-year-old Ramirez allowed five hits and three runs with two walks and six strikeouts in Cincinnati's 7-6 win over the Giants on Saturday night. He was in line for the win until San Francisco scored three times in the eighth inning to tie the game. Ramirez had been called up from Louisville earlier Saturday.

The 24-year-old Castillo was acquired on Aug. 14 as the player to be named later in the Aug. 11 trade of outfielder Adam Dunn to Arizona. In a combined 115 games at Triple-A Tucson and Louisville, he combined to hit .248 while playing 54 games at catcher, five at second base, 48 at third base, six at shortstop and eight in left field. When he plays, he will be making his major league debut.
