Short Hops: Different kind of storm threatening Windy City World Series

It's hurricane season, yes. But on the Great Lakes?

The latest Doppler Radar is tracking a tropical storm out over Lake Michigan now, one that's bearing down hard on Chicago and threatening to blow the pages of October right off of the calendar.

The silence surrounding the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden is ominous. Harden's history we knew about, and all along it was going to be a race between him and Milwaukee's Ben Sheets to see who could remain healthy -- and, thus, keep his team's hopes real -- down the stretch.

But Zambrano, who never met a 130-pitch game he couldn't conquer, coming up sore?

Uh-oh.

If he becomes unavailable for stretch run and playoff duty, then the Cubs are doomed to begin work on a second consecutive century without World Series rings. And when an MRI reveals rotator cuff tendinitis and inflammation, that's cause for concern. Anti-inflammatory shot, or not.

Meantime, business as usual on the South Side, where things remain just as entertaining as ever as Chicago wages an epic AL Central battle with Minnesota.

Comforting, in a crazy-as-a-Sox way.

Manager Ozzie Guillen indicated this week that Joe Crede's back problems could sideline the third baseman for the season.

Crede says he's day-to-day.

I say tomato, you say ... zucchini?

Listen, they wouldn't be the Sox without the occasional non-sequitor. But more worrisome is the right forearm of slugger Carlos Quentin, whose lingering pain near his right wrist after Boston's Josh Beckett drilled him with a pitch on Aug. 11 is becoming an issue. He was scratched from Wednesday's game against Cleveland and is questionable for this weekend's potential playoff preview series against the Angels.

Quentin leads the AL with 36 home runs, though he hasn't hit one since Aug. 24. The White Sox hope a few days of rest does wonders and that he'll be back early next week when Toronto comes to town.
