Kinsler gives up on '08, will have surgery for sports hernia

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler will have season-ending surgery to repair a sports hernia.

Kinsler last played Aug. 17, and an MRI the following day revealed the injury. Kinsler was hopeful of avoiding surgery and possibly playing again this season, but he remains sore and the Rangers said Friday he will have surgery next week.

A first-time All-Star this year, Kinsler hit .319 with 18 homers, 71 RBI, 41 doubles and 26 steals in 121 games.
