DENVER -- Jorge De La Rosa threw six solid innings, Chris Iannetta and Clint Barmes homered and the Colorado Rockies hurt the Arizona Diamondbacks' hopes for the NL West title with a 3-2 win Friday night.
The loss ended the Diamondbacks' four-game win streak and put a dent in their chances of catching the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Arizona came into Friday 3½ games behind the Dodgers with 10 games to go. The Dodgers hosted the San Francisco Giants later on Friday night.
Three weeks ago the Diamondbacks had a 4½-game lead in the division, but lost 11 of 14 before sweeping the Giants at home earlier this week. Arizona had held at least a share of the NL West lead from April 6 through Sept. 6.
Garrett Atkins had three hits for the Rockies. Adam Dunn homered and had two hits, and Mark Reynolds homered for Arizona.
Trailing 3-1 entering the ninth, Arizona rallied against Colorado closer Brian Fuentes. Reynolds hit his 28th home run with one out, Chris Snyder singled and David Eckstein was hit by a pitch. Pinch-hitter Tony Clark struck out and Stephen Drew walked to load the bases. Fuentes struck out Chris Young for his 29th save in 33 chances.
De La Rosa (9-8) struck out six, walked three and allowed three hits while continuing a strong stretch by Colorado pitchers. The Rockies' pitching staff has allowed just three earned runs in its past 26 1/3 innings.
Arizona starter Max Scherzer (0-3) allowed three runs on seven hits, struck out eight and walked one in six innings in his sixth start of the season. Full story
Astros 5, Pirates 1
PITTSBURGH -- Randy Wolf allowed three hits in seven innings and Hunter Pence had two hits and three RBI to help Houston snap a five-game losing streak.
Wolf (11-12) gave up one run and struck out seven to win for the third time in four starts this month. The left-hander beat the Pirates for the second time in 10 days and won his sixth straight decision against Pittsburgh.
Ty Wigginton and Geoff Blum also had RBI for Houston, which began Friday five games behind the New York Mets for the wild-card lead.
The Astros, who were held to a combined 16 hits during their losing streak, had six hits against the Pirates.
Padres 11, Nationals 6 (14)
WASHINGTON -- Chase Headley had four hits, including a tie-breaking triple that keyed a five-run 14th inning, and San Diego beat Washington.
It was a game between the teams with the worst records in the National League. Both began the game, which lasted 5 hours, tied with 58-95 marks.
With the score tied at 6, Kevin Kouzmanoff led off the 14th and was hit by a pitch by Levale Speigner (0-1), Washington's ninth pitcher which tied a club record. Headley, who also had two doubles and a single, tripled off the right field wall to score Kouzmanoff. Nick Hundley's single scored Headley. Brian Giles walked with the bases loaded and Adrian Gonzalez added a two-run single.
Justin Hampson (2-1), San Diego's eighth pitcher, got one out in the 13th, to get the win. Trevor Hoffman, appearing in his 900th game with the Padres, worked the 14th.
Athletics 2, Mariners 0
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Travis Buck homered for the first time since being called up from the minors, Dana Eveland pitched seven strong innings and Oakland beat Seattle.
The A's did all of their scoring in the second inning off Felix Hernandez, who pitched effectively but couldn't overcome another lack of offensive support from his teammates. The Mariners, who lost their ninth straight game, have been shut out four times this season with Hernandez (9-11) on the mound.
Eveland (9-8) pitched in and out of trouble all game but got out of a jam each time to earn the win, his first in six starts. The left-hander scattered seven hits, hit a batter and matched his career high with seven strikeouts to lead the A's to their fifth victory in six games.
Joey Devine pitched the eighth and Joey Ziegler worked the ninth for his 10th save in 11 tries.
Giants 7, Dodgers 1
LOS ANGELES -- Barry Zito took a shutout into the eighth inning and San Francisco beat Los Angeles, slowing the Dodgers' drive toward an NL West title.
Despite their fourth loss in 19 games, the Dodgers' magic number for clinching the division crown was reduced to six because of Arizona's 3-2 loss at Colorado. Los Angeles leads the Diamondbacks by 3½ games with eight to play.
Bengie Molina homered for the second consecutive game, had three hits and drove in four runs to help the Giants snap a four-game skid along with a seven-game home winning streak by the rival Dodgers. San Francisco was coming off a four-game sweep by the Diamondbacks.
Winding down the worst full season of his nine-year career, Zito (10-16) threw 119 pitches over 7 2/3 innings, allowing a run and six hits while striking out six. The 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner retired 13 of 14 batters during one stretch before Pablo Ozuna homered with one out in the eighth. The utility second baseman ended a drought of 80 games since his previous homer on Aug. 17, 2006.
