Lowell has hip surgery day after Red Sox eliminated

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell has had surgery on his right hip.

Red Sox spokesman John Blake said Lowell was awake after his surgery Monday. Blake said last year's World Series MVP wanted to surgery now to have sufficient time to recover before spring training.

The arthroscopic surgery repaired a tear in his hip and fixed a bone spur.

Lowell had previously said his hip started bothering him a few weeks before the All-Star break. He was limited to one at-bat in the final 11 regular-season games and went 0-for-8 in two postseason games.

Lowell had surgery a day after the Red Sox lost 3-1 to Tampa Bay Rays in Game 7 of the ALCS.
