White Sox slugger Quentin says surgically repaired wrist is OK

CHICAGO -- White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin said his surgically repaired right wrist has responded well and he's been able to do some light hitting without any problems.

"Just kind of going through the normal routine in the offseason where I've just gotten back into hitting and I really haven't felt much of it during the swing," Quentin said Friday during a conference call.

Quentin was leading the AL with 36 homers on Sept. 1 when he broke his wrist in a fit of frustration in Cleveland. After fouling off a pitch from Cliff Lee, he slapped his bat with his right hand while holding it with the left.

He ended up with a broken bone that needed surgery and a screw was inserted. Quentin worked hard to rehab and said he would have been able to play if the White Sox had made it past the first round of the playoffs, where they lost in four games to the Tampa Bay Rays.

"I think everyone knows I was ready to go if we had continued with the season," Quentin said.

Once the season did end, Quentin said he took several more weeks off just make sure his injury was fully healed.

"It has responded great," he said.

He ended up batting .288 with 100 RBI in his season with the White Sox, made the All-Star team and earlier this week won a Silver Slugger Award.

The White Sox have already made several offseason moves, declining options on Ken Griffey Jr. and Toby Hall and trading Nick Swisher to the Yankees earlier in the week.

While Quentin blossomed into a star and No. 3 hitter in his first season in Chicago, Swisher struggled in his only season with the White Sox. He batted .219 - hitting only .164 in the final month -- to go with 24 homers.

"Swish had a year that was subpar for his standards," Quentin said, adding that he expected the switch-hitting Swisher to bounce back with the Yankees.
