Twelve years later, Rose's reinstatement application still under review

ST. LOUIS -- Twelve years later, baseball commissioner Bud Selig still is examining Pete Rose's application for reinstatement.

The career hits leader agreed to a lifetime ban from baseball in 1989 after an investigation concluded he bet on the Cincinnati Reds to win while he was manager of the team.

Rose applied for reinstatement in September 1997 and met with Selig in November 2002. His effort to gain reinstatement appeared to falter after he admitted in his 2004 autobiography, Pete Rose: My Prison Without Bars, that his previous gambling denials were false.

"It is under review," Selig said Tuesday during a question-and-answer session with the Baseball Writers' Association of America. "He did, as you know, accept voluntarily a lifetime suspension from Bart Giamatti, and there really isn't much more I can say about that. I did agree to review it. It is under review. We do spend some time discussing it. But it's not I think appropriate for me to say any more."

While on the lifetime banned list, Rose is ineligible for the Hall of Fame ballot. The Hall's board of directors decided unanimously in February 2001 that anyone on the permanently ineligible list couldn't appear on the BBWAA ballot.

Rose's final year of eligibility in the writers' vote would have been 2006. Jane Forbes Clark, the Hall's chairman, has left open the possibility that the Hall would allow Rose a spot on the BBWAA should he gain reinstatement.

There are differences in the baseball hall of fame compared to the other sports. It does have things in its charter that state you must have been a morally upright citizen and all of that good stuff. Has that been ignored? Absolutely. In many cases with many players, in multiple situations.

Pete Rose as a player deserves to be in the hall of fame without a doubt. Pete ...(more)

From what I've read here, I don't think mine is going to be a very popular take on the Pete Rose question.

There is no doubt that Selig is a giant pud, and there is no doubt that baseball's purity left town a long time ago, but as a Reds fan during the 33 years that DC had no team  (they still don't, actually) my feeling i

Rose bet on his team to win, but not every day. If he knew that he was going to bet on the Reds tomorrow - but not today - that could influence how he handled his pitching, bench and bullpen today so that it wouldn't be depleated for tomorrow's money game. Betting to win or lose is the same thing. Its cheating, particularly by the man ...(more)

Look every time I'm in vegas I go visit this guy in the caesars mall (anyone can he works in a sports shop).  I feel bad for him.  HE seems like a lost puppy dog.  Now with all these steroid users coming out, we need all the ROID FREE players we can find.  WHy not have Rose in the Hall of Fame?  Compared to the crimes in baseball toda, he looks like a saint.  Bud Seli ...(more)

He belongs in the Hall of Fame, there are much worse people that have done much worse things in there. If he bet on his team to lose! That would have been the worst. He belongs in the Hall but should NEVER be allowed to manage or coach AGAIN!  That I 100% stand behind.

Every time the subject comes up, we hear the false equivalencies and pleas for mercy rooted in a lack of grasp of the inarguable facts of the case.  Let us review, therefore.

Peter Edward Rose:

--Knew full well of the prohibition against gambling in baseball and the consequences of its violation; it's not as though it isn't printed and posted, in large letters an ...(more)

It is plain and simple PETE ROSE belongs in the Hall of Fame.

Roberto Clemente, a great player and person. He died unexpectedly in a plane crash while helping others in the off season. My point is he was IMMEDIATELY inducted and did not have to wait the 7 years.

In different circumstances....PETE ROSE should have also been IMMEDIATELY inducted in the Hall of Fame. Come on The
