Yankees fans pack Wall Street to celebrate team's 27th title

NEW YORK -- Crowds roared, church bells rang and streams of paper rained down on Broadway as the New York Yankees celebrated their 27th World Series championship on Friday in a way only this city can, with a parade up the Canyon of Heroes.

The players, joined by celebrity fans and Yankees of the past, drank it all in as they rode on floats and double-decker buses through Lower Manhattan.

It has been years since the city used actual ticker-tape to celebrate its World Series wins, but the experience was still authentic to the many thousands who crammed the sidewalks along the parade route near Wall Street.

"I love it!" said city sanitation worker John Freeman, as he raked up confetti and toilet paper rolls thrown from skyscrapers.

Whole families skipped work and school to be there. Players recorded the crowd with their cameras as they rode to a second celebration at City Hall, where the mayor presented the team with keys to the city.

Shortstop Derek Jeter carried the trophy, hoisting it high above his head while the crowd screamed and We are the Champions blasted on loudspeakers.

"It's been too long, hasn't it?" he told the crowd, a reference to the team's eight-year absence from the top of Major League Baseball. "It feels good to be back."

Fans and players brimming with classic New York confidence let it be known that they didn't plan to relinquish their title anytime soon.

The crowd at City Hall chanted "28." Manager Joe Girardi said he had already talked on the phone with team owner George Steinbrenner about not letting up next year.

"He told me this morning ... the only thing greater than this celebration is doing it two years in a row," Girardi said. "So he asked me to remind everyone, pitchers and catchers report in 96 days. Be ready to defend it."

Jay-Z capped the celebration with a performance of his song Empire State of Mind.

The Yankees beat the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies to win the best-of-7 series in six games. The title was the team's first since 2000, and came during the first season of the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium.

"There's no better way to inaugurate a new stadium," said Michael Rheubottom, a city jail guard, who attended with his 13-year-old son, Jason. "This is the house that Jeter built. We don't even remember the house that Ruth built."

Pitcher Mariano Rivera, who waved a Panamanian flag as he rode in the parade, called the outpouring of support "beautiful."

"The city of New York, the fans ... you can't put it into words. It's magnificent," he said.

Alex Rodriguez, finally free of all the criticism that had been heaped upon him for failing to win a championship, wore a black hat and a wide smile.

"We waited a long time for this," he said. "I've never seen so many people connected in one place. Excitement. It just seems like they were as hungry as we were. The fans really wanted this. They were hungry."

Yankee greats of the past, including Yogi Berra and Reggie Jackson, were on hand for the celebration. Jackson urged the players to enjoy the experience, noting that as players, "You never know if it'll happen again."

Some fans were more confident the trophy would be back soon enough on lower Broadway -- the narrow Canyon of Heroes that has seen some 200 ticker-tape parades for astronauts, foreign leaders, sports champions and five-star generals.

"We're going for 28, baby," said Ulysses Coleman, of Manhattan. "Next year it's ours, it's in the bag."

Everything that is wrong about America is wrong about the Yankees. The Yankees are a microcosm about what America has become. Win at all cost. If you can't do it clean then cheat. If that don't work then buy the championship. If theres still too much opposition then buy the opposition, and sit them so they don't play against you. If you sti ...(more)

It doesn't appear that one of the most elementary rules of business registers with the gaggle of Yankee haters who've posted so often about how unfair it is that NY won another World Series this year. They all claim that the Yankees only win because they spend a ton of money on players. Haven't they ever considered that the Yankees have all ...(more)

Another World Series won by Free Agency. Just seems unfair that a team with alot of money gets the better guys, and gets the prize. How about we make this more interesting. What the NFL is doing with the salary cap is better that what the MLB is doing. Maybe instead of the NFL doing no Cap the MLB should do the Cap. I'm not whining that the ...(more)

Doesn't matter how big of a Yankee fan you are, this is telling kids that not only can you buy 'happiness' with money but you can do so while taking illegal substances.  Just not a good day when these youngs kids realize that gaining an edge on the competition by any means necessary, money, drugs, cheating, is acceptable.  Values, morals, all can be thrown out the window because ...(more)

A lot of complaining about buying a team. Big deal. Ever since gym class in grade school, kids pick players to be on the dodgeball, kickball, soccer, etc team. The philosophy is to put together the best team. I think a lot of the 'itchin' comes from those folks picked last.

It sickens me to hear some of these delusional Yankee fans talk about how special this team was. Some are even so absurd to call this Yankee team "underdogs" and they're making them sound like the feel good story of the year. I have news for you Yankee fans: You're not the 2003 Marlins or 1969 ...(more)

Can athletes be made to suffer some indignity when the prove to be wrong. I'd love to shove something up Rollins delusional poop chute.

BTW. Mo was the MVP. Or Damon. That double steal is the image of the Series. The Geico Gekko only showed in 2 games (16 ABs). Mo is the best RP we've had and Jeter the SS. Definite Monument Park invitees. Petitte and Jorge are ok but they are third

Well I love to say this to all the haters..I TOLD YOU SO!

Now again for the haters who say that the Yanks spend too much, or they have players who use(d) steroids or anyother slur against the most winningest team in the history of sports...too bad, so sad.

Is it just the Yankees spending money on players? Is it ju

It's almost embarassing to see New York celebrate so much over winning the World Series. They bought it! It's no accomplishment! If I had 200 million dollars for payroll, guess what, I COULD WIN A WORLD SERIES! It's not that hard! It's just embarassing to see them so proud when it only took them 2 billion dollars and 9 years to win a championship!

I really love all of the hate that people post about the Yankees.... When are the Champs that comes with the territory....

To all the whiners out there let me explain something to you.... The object of owning a sports franchise is to WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.... Whining about how much the Yanks spend is just plain stupid.... Why woul

It's not the Yankees fault that baseball is set up this way.  They make tons of money, and spend tons of money.  Is it fair?  No it is not fair, I agree.  But it is the system and the fans of any team in baseball with a high revenue stream would want their owners to spend part of the revenue on qual ...(more)

The Yankees send the best message in the world for kids; work hard like Derek Jeter and you can be part of the greatest team in the history of sports.  Work hard and succeed; what better message could you send than that?

I could be speaking for many many people, but no one cares!!!  Good for the Yankees, they won, i mean bought, their 27th championship and NO ONE CARES anymore.  Its over with and now we are all going to have to hear about this for the next year or more.  It's just like Brett Farve who just won't go away and will eat up every ...(more)
