Former Padre E. Gonzalez signs with Japanese team
TOKYO -- Former San Diego Padres second baseman Edgar Gonzalez signed with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Central League on Friday.
"I'm very excited to play for a team with such a rich tradition," Gonzalez said in a statement on the team's official Web site.
The 31-year-old hit .216 in 82 games for San Diego in 2009, missing time with a concussion and a shoulder injury.
The Giants won the Japan Series in 2009 and have won the Central League pennant for the past three years.
Gonzalez, who can also play shortstop, third base and outfield, hit .274 with seven homers and 33 RBI in his rookie campaign in 2008.
