Indians shortstop Cabrera nursing strained left groin, day to day

  •

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is day to day with a strained left groin.

Cabrera was not available for the Indians' game against the Texas Rangers on Saturday.

"It's just going to be a couple of days, it is no big deal," Cabrera said in the Indians clubhouse.

He was injured diving back to third base on a pickoff attempt in the fourth inning Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. He walked off the field without assistance.

Cabrera moved from second base to his natural position of shortstop in 2009. The 24-year-old hit .308 with 42 doubles, six home runs and 68 RBI in 131 games, 100 of them at short.

Minor leaguer Carlos Rivero started at short against the Rangers. Starting second baseman Luis Valbuena and third baseman Jhonny Peralta, who preceded Cabrera at the position, also can play short.

Cabrera, a switch-hitter moved into the leadoff spot this season by new manager Manny Acta, is batting .500 (5 for 10), including a leadoff home run in Cleveland's first spring training game.
