Red Sox designate P Schoeneweis for assignment

  •

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox have designated left-hander Scott Schoeneweis for assignment.

He got the news on Wednesday night as he was getting ready for the first anniversary of his wife's death from a drug overdose.

Schoeneweis was 1-0 with a 7.90 ERA in 15 appearances for the Red Sox this season.

Gabrielle Schoeneweis wife died on May 20 last year from an overdose of cocaine and an anesthetic, lidocaine.

The Red Sox needed room on the roster for infielder Angel Sanchez, who was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket and put in the lineup for Thursday night's game against the Minnesota Twins.

The Red Sox have 10 days to trade or release Shoeneweis.
