Roundup: Guillen helps Giants keep pace in wild card

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jose Guillen hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-7 on Sunday after wasting a fine outing by pitcher Matt Cain.

Freddy Sanchez added three hits and two RBI for the Giants, who avoided being swept by the last-place Diamondbacks and pulled within five games of San Diego in the NL West.

San Francisco remained 1½ games behind Philadelphia for the NL wild card.

Stephen Drew had four hits for Arizona, including his 11th home run of the season.

Jeremy Affeldt (3-3) got two outs for the win while Brian Wilson recorded the final five outs for his 36th save in 38 tries.

The Giants dropped the first two games of the series after their starting pitchers struggled to get out of the first inning. Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito allowed a combined nine runs in the opening frame and both took the loss.

This time it was San Francisco's bullpen that fell apart and nearly proved costly until Guillen bailed the Giants out. Full story

Tigers 10, Blue Jays 4

TORONTO -- Ryan Raburn hit two home runs and Rick Porcello pitched three-hit ball for seven innings for Detroit.

Porcello (7-11) won back-to-back starts for the first time this season. He walked none and struck out four.

In his last outing, Porcello shut out Kansas City on two hits for seven innings.

Raburn hit a solo home run off the facing of the second deck in left field against Jesse Carlson in the seventh, then added a three-run shot off Brian Tallet in the eighth that made it 10-1. Raburn has 10 home runs this year, and it was the fourth multihomer game of his career.

Mets 5, Astros 1

NEW YORK -- R.A. Dickey flustered the Houston Astros with knuckleballs and foiled them with his bat, leading the New York Mets to a victory.

Josh Thole homered and Dickey keyed a second-inning rally with a two-run single that helped the Mets end Bud Norris' four-game winning streak. New York took two of three from the Astros and hasn't lost a series at home to Houston since 2002.

Luis Castillo added an RBI single and the Mets went 4-3 against the Astros the past two weeks in a season series marked by some strikingly inept offense on both sides.

Dickey (9-5) yielded six hits in seven-plus innings and had a pair of singles at the plate to aid his own cause.

Orioles 1, Angels 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jeremy Guthrie allowed four hits while pitching into the ninth inning, and two relievers finished the victory, completing Baltimore's six-game season sweep of the struggling Angels.

Luke Scott scored on Matt Wieters' sacrifice fly in the seventh. The Orioles limited the Angels to one run in three games while sweeping the season series for the first time by either club in a half-century of competition.

Guthrie (8-13) allowed only one runner to reach third base until Reggie Willits hustled for a one-out double in the ninth and advanced on Howie Kendrick's single.

Reliever Michael Gonzalez struck out Bobby Abreu, and Torii Hunter popped out on Koji Uehara's only pitch.

Brewers 8, Pirates 4

MILWAUKEE -- Trevor Hoffman earned his 599th career save and Ryan Braun homered as Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh.

The all-time saves leader entered the game with one out in the ninth and two runners on base, and retired both batters he faced to convert his eighth save in 13 chances this year. The right-hander lost his closer's job to John Axford earlier in the season, but manager Ken Macha in recent weeks has allowed him to close games with leads of three runs or more in an effort to get him to 600 saves.

The Brewers roughed up Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton for eight runs in just 3 1/3 innings.

Royals 6, Indians 2

CLEVELAND -- Kila Ka'aihue hit a go-ahead double in the seventh inning to help Bruce Chen and Kansas City defeat Cleveland.

Chen (9-7) allowed two runs and six hits over six innings as the Royals avoided a three-game sweep and pulled two games ahead of last-place Cleveland in the AL Central. Kansas City is 5-17 on the road since July 8.

Mike Aviles blooped a one-out single to center off Fausto Carmona (11-13) and scored on Ka'aihue's drive into the left-center gap to put the Royals ahead 3-2.

Mitch Maier and Brayan Pena each had two RBI for Kansas City, which also got a ninth-inning run on a wild throw by shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, his first error in 34 games since July 21.
