German, Mathis, McCarthy refuse Texas assignments, now FAs wire reports

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers have sent infielder Esteban German and right-handers Doug Mathis and Brandon McCarthy outright to the minor leagues, and the trio have refused the assignments and become free agents.

The AL champions also said right-hander Scott Feldman had right knee surgery Wednesday that will prevent him from throwing for about three months. He will be limited at the start of spring training.

Feldman won 17 games in 2009, then got a three-year contract worth $13,925,000. He started the season opener, but was 5-10 as a starter before going to the bullpen and being left off the postseason roster.

Mathis made 13 relief appearances for Texas, but spent most of the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City. McCarthy didn't appear in the majors and was bothered by right shoulder inflammation.
