ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays have designated outfielder Justin Ruggiano and first baseman-outfielder Leslie Anderson for assignment, creating openings on the 40-man roster for free-agent acquisitions Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez.
The AL East champions finalized one-year deals with Damon and Ramirez on Tuesday. Damon's contract is worth $5.25 million plus incentives based on attendance, while Ramirez signed for $2 million.
The Rays have 10 days to trade, release or outright Ruggiano and Anderson to the minor leagues.
Damon and Ramirez were introduced last week as the club's biggest acquisitions this winter.
