No surgery, but M's Aardsma to rest for a month wire reports

CLEVELAND -- Seattle Mariners closer David Aardsma will not have elbow surgery to repair a strained ligament.

The Mariners said Friday that the right-hander met with Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles to get a second opinion on a diagnosis by team physician Dr. Edward Khalfayan. Yocum and Khalfayan conferred and have prescribed one month of rest, followed by a throwing program.

Aardsma had surgery on his left hip in January by Dr. Marc Phillipon and opened the season on the disabled list.

While on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma, he experienced discomfort in the elbow.

The 29-year-old totaled 69 saves the past two years for the Mariners.
