BALTIMORE -- The Orioles have reinstated right-hander Alfredo Simon from the restricted list.
Simon has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in his native Dominican Republic. No trial date has been set.
He had to be activated by Sunday from the restricted list, but the Orioles made the move early after playing a 15-inning game on Wednesday and losing 17-5 to the Nationals on Friday night. Full Story
PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates have placed third baseman Pedro Alvarez on the 15-day disabled list with a lingering leg injury and recalled infielder Pedro Ciriaco from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Alvarez missed four games earlier this month after straining his right quadriceps. He aggravated it last weekend against Milwaukee and manager Clint Hurdle said it didn't appear to be getting better.
Brandon Wood replaced Alvarez in the lineup for Saturday night's game against the Tigers.
NEW YORK -- Yankees backup outfielder Chris Dickerson has been cleared to play, three days after he was hit in the head by a fastball that left him with a concussion.
Like other sports, baseball recently implemented new rules regulating when players can return to action following a concussion.
Dickerson says his impact test was reviewed Friday and he was examined by a neurologist, who cleared him to play. The test results were then sent to Major League Baseball, which also gave him an OK.
He participated fully in batting and fielding practice before the Yankees hosted the Mets, but was not in the starting lineup.
CLEVELAND -- Indians rookie Alex White has no idea what has caused soreness in his right middle finger that landed him on the 15-day disabled list.
The right-hander got hurt in the third inning of Friday night's game against Cincinnati. He felt pain while throwing a slider, but remained in the game to finish the inning after he was examined by a trainer.
"I have no clue what it is. I've never had this," White said Saturday before going for an MRI exam. "It's sore and swollen. We've been treating it -- ice and stuff -- but we can't really do much until we know what the problem is."
PITTSBURGH -- The Tigers have placed left-handed reliever Brad Thomas on the 15-day disabled list and called up highly touted prospect Charlie Furbush from Triple-A Toledo.
Thomas injured his left elbow while warming up in the bullpen Friday night during an eventual 10-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Manager Jim Leyland says a postgame examination revealed inflammation in the joint. Thomas is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 12 appearances this season.
