Doctor: More seek controversial therapy Colon had

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- One of the doctors who assisted in a procedure last year on Yankees starter Bartolo Colon says that 10 other pitchers have expressed interest in undergoing the treatment that is being scrutinized by Major League Baseball.

Dr. Leonel Liriano said Sunday in a Dominican TV interview that 10 pitchers between the ages of 21 to 37 have contacted him about the contentious medical treatment. He did not disclose the identities of the athletes.

Liriano is the medical director for United States-based Regenocyte in the Dominican Republic. The company specializes in the use of stem cells for regenerative therapy.

The 37-year-old Colon, the 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner, was treated in April 2010 with a procedure designed to regenerate tissue in his shoulder and elbow.

Marlins activate Hensley from DL

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins have activated reliever Clay Hensley from the 15-day disabled list.

Hensley had been sidelined with bruised left ribs. The right-hander entered Sunday's game against Tampa Bay with no record and a 2.77 ERA in 16 appearances.

To make room for Hensley, infielder Ozzie Martinez was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans.

Twins place Perkins on DL

PHOENIX -- The Minnesota Twins have placed left-handed reliever Glen Perkins on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right oblique.

The Twins recalled left-hander Dusty Hughes from Triple-A Rochester to take Perkins' roster spot. Perkins, 0-1 with a team-best 1.59 ERA in 22 appearances, was injured in the eighth inning of the Twins' 9-6 loss to Arizona on Saturday night.

Hughes began the season with Minnesota, going 1-0 with a 10.13 ERA in 12 appearances. He was optioned to Rochester on May 6, where he had a 5.06 ERA in five appearances.

Rays SS Brignac on bereavement list

MIAMI -- Tampa Bay shortstop Reid Brignac was placed on the bereavement list Sunday and infielder Felipe Lopez was called up from Triple-A Durham to take his place on the roster against the Marlins.

Brignac's grandfather died Saturday in St. Amant, La.

Brignac has started 32 games this season and is batting .170 with no home runs and six RBI.

Lopez was with the Rays for 24 games earlier this season.

Tigers shift Guillen to 60-day DL

PITTSBURGH -- The Tigers optioned right-handed reliever Brayan Villarreal to Triple-A Toledo and transferred infielder Carlos Guillen to the 60-day disabled list.

Enrique Gonzalez will take Villarreal's spot in the bullpen.

Villarreal has struggled this month after a solid April. He allowed two runs in a loss to Pittsburgh on Friday.

The 35-year-old Guillen hasn't played since having microfracture surgery on his left knee last September.
