Pirates designate catcher Brown for assignment

CBSSports.com wire reports

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated catcher Dusty Brown for assignment and called up catcher Eric Fryer from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Brown hit .107 in 11 games for the Pirates this season. He was called up from Indianapolis on May 30 to help steady a catching position decimated by injuries to regulars Chris Snyder and Ryan Doumit.

Snyder is in on the 60-day DL following back surgery while Doumit is on the 15-day DL with a broken left ankle.

Fryer is the seventh catcher on Pittsburgh's active roster this year. He is batting .262 with two home runs and nine RBI in 21 games for Indianapolis. He was available on Saturday night with the Pirates hosted the Boston Red Sox.
