Roundup: Stanton's two HRs power Marlins' rout of Cubs

  •

CHICAGO -- Mike Stanton hit two home runs, Javier Vazquez struck out 10 and the Florida Marlins routed the Chicago Cubs.

Stanton got three hits and drove in four runs. He hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and added a three-run shot, his 20th, in the fifth off Carlos Zambrano.

Zambrano (6-5) was activated from the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day.

He had a rocky 4 2/3 innings, giving up eight earned runs on seven hits and four walks.

Vazquez (6-8) went seven innings and pitched the Marlins to their seventh win in eight games.

Vazquez allowed only one hit through 5 1/3 innings. Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Full Story

Nationals 5, Braves 2

ATLANTA -- John Lannan gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings and had his first two hits of the season to lead the Washington Nationals to a victory over the Atlanta Braves.

Lannan (6-6) also drove in two runs and earned the win eight days after he escaped with only a small cartilage break in his nose when he was hit by a line drive.

Drew Storen pitched the ninth for his 24th save.

Wilson Ramos hit a two-run homer and run-scoring double for the Nationals. Alex Gonzalez hit a two-run homer for Atlanta.

Astros 6, Pirates 4

HOUSTON -- Humberto Quintero hit the go-ahead single in a three-run eighth inning to lift the Houston Astros to a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Astros trailed 4-3 before Hunter Pence walked and scored on a fielder's choice to tie it up in the eighth.

Clint Barmes reached on an error by Brandon Wood when his grounder bounced off his glove and into the outfield to leave runners at the corners with one out.

Quintero's knock to shallow left field off Jose Veras (2-3) sent one home to give Houston the lead. Michael Bourn added an insurance run with his two out, RBI single off Chris Leroux that made it 6-4.

Red Sox 9, Rays 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury and Josh Reddick homered and the Boston Red Sox rallied from an early three-run deficit against All-Star James Shields to beat the Tampa Bay Rays.

John Lackey (7-8) struck out seven while allowing four runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings for the AL East leaders, who retained a 1 1/2-game lead over the New York Yankees and dropped the third-place Rays a season-high six games off the pace in the division.

Reddick's two-run homer got Boston rolling after the Rays staked Shields (8-8) to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Ellsbury hit a solo shot in the fourth, while Pedroia homered for the third consecutive game when he connected off Juan Cruz in the seventh.

Diamondbacks 3, Dodgers 2

PHOENIX -- Brandon Allen hit a three-run homer in his first start back in the majors to provide Ian Kennedy all the support he needed and lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Allen, recalled from Triple-A Reno on Friday, connected off Hiroki Kuroda (6-11) in the second inning and Kennedy (10-3) overcame some late control problems to become Arizona's first 10-game winner.

Fill-in closer David Hernandez worked a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

All-Star Matt Kemp homered for the second straight game to further erase memories of a forgetful Home Run Derby and Kuroda was solid except for the one pitch to Allen. The Dodgers had just five hits to see their five-game winning streak end.

Padres 11, Giants 3

SAN DIEGO -- Jesus Guzman and Orlando Hudson each hit three-run homers, and rookie Corey Luebke pitched seven strong innings to help the San Diego Padres snap a season-high seven-game losing streak with a win over the San Francisco Giants.

Guzman had a career-high four RBI for the NL's worst offensive team.

San Diego, which has scored the fewest runs in the NL and has the league's lowest batting average, scored its most runs since an 11-2 win against Atlanta on June 24.

Guzman connected off Barry Zito (3-2) in the first inning and Hudson hit his long ball off the lefty in the third inning to give San Diego a 7-0 lead.
