Mariners place pitcher Ray on DL; recall Laffey

CBSSports.com wire reports

SEATTLE -- Chris Ray was placed on the 15-day disabled list after the Seattle Mariners reliever strained a muscle in his right shoulder.

The move was made Monday but is retroactive to July 30. The Mariners recalled left-hander Aaron Laffey from Triple-A Tacoma. Laffey was sent to Tacoma on Saturday, and was able to be recalled so quickly because of the injury.

Seattle manager Eric Wedge said the injury was bothering Ray enough that the disabled list was the best move to make sure he didn't make it worse. Ray is 3-2 with a 4.68 ERA in 29 games this season. Since May 1 he is 2-1 with a 2.39 ERA in 22 appearances.

Laffey is 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA but struggled in his last four outings, giving up nine runs.
