Zach Britton didn't want to make excuses. But he now has some explanations.
After a stellar start to his rookie year, the left-hander is headed to the disabled list with a left shoulder strain following a series of alarmingly poor outings.
His most recent start ended after 5 1/3 innings, and six runs on 12 hits. He fell to 6-9, with his last win coming June 8.
Britton's trek to the disabled list will be enough to keep infielder Blake Davis from being optioned to the minors.
Manager Buck Showalter said Friday night he didn't think Britton would be gone long.
Friday's news is a gift for Britton, who likely would have been shut down in September as things currently stand. Instead, Britton will get a chance to rest and recover now before opening later this month in a better place.
A series of roster shuffles was made Friday.
Cesar Izturis was activated from the disabled list, replacing Britton on the active roster. The club also designated former top pitching prospect Brandon Erbe for assignment, making room for Izturis on the 40-man roster.
