Jeff Niemann said there is no specific reason for his stellar run since coming off the disabled list.
In eight starts, Niemann is 5-0, 2.26 since returning in late June after missing six weeks with a lower back strain.
"It's been a combination of things," Niemann said, citing improved command of his fastball, better break on his curve and increased effectiveness in tight spots.
He did all that well and more in Friday's 8-4 win, falling just an out short of a complete game as he gave up three extra-base hits in the ninth.
"It was tough, but Joe (Maddon, manager) gave me every chance possible to try and finish that game," Niemann said. "It wasn't in the cards."
