To fill his spot on the roster, the Tigers recalled second baseman Will Rhymes from Triple-A Toledo. Both moves were made Sunday before Detroit closed out a three-game series against the Orioles.
Guillen started the season on the disabled list while recovering from left knee surgery. He was activated July 16 and hit .357 over his first eight games, but a 4-for-28 slump over his past 10 games dropped his batting average to .207.
Rhymes hit .303 with three homers and 23 RBI in 89 games with Toledo this season. He started the season with Detroit, batting .221 in 19 games before being optioned to Toledo on May 2.
