--LHP Brian Burres will be recalled Friday and is expected to start the matinee against the Cubs in Chicago. Burres, 30, was 5-9 with a 4.66 ERA for Class AAA Indianapolis, but his final two starts were strong. "I feel like I was able to get back into a groove," Burres said.
--C Jason Jaramillo was the only player the Pirates recalled on the first day rosters could expand. Jaramillo will be the third-string catcher behind Ryan Doumit and Mike McKenry. Jaramillo batted .276 with two home runs and 23 RBI for Indianapolis.
--RHP Brad Lincoln had a 2.00 ERA through four starts, including six scoreless innings Saturday in St. Louis, and he did reasonably well in allowing three runs to the Dodgers in a 6-4 loss Thursday. All three came in the first inning, and he left bases loaded in the sixth.
--C Ryan Doumit snapped out of a 3-for-23 slide by going 3-for-4 in the loss. But he also committed a passed ball, then inexplicably watched as the runner scored from third even as the pitcher awaited his throw to the plate. Fans booed Doumit loudly.
--3B Josh Harrison continued to make his case for regular playing time all through September with a 13-for-36 roll before Thursday's game, including a home run, a triple and five doubles. He also has fared better than expected on defense. "I take pride in that," Harrison said. He went 0-for-4 in the loss to the Dodgers.
