It appears doubtful right-hander Felipe Paulino will make his Monday start at Oakland.
Paulino was scratched from a Wednesday start at Detroit with lower back spasms. He received a cortisone shot Friday in his lower back.
Paulino said a MRI showed minor inflammation in a disk in his lower left side, although it does not appear serious.
Manager Ned Yost said he did not if Paulino would be able to make his next start against the Athletics.
"If we're going to err, we'll be on the safe side with him," Yost said.
Yost said rookie right-hander Nate Adcock, a Rule 5 pick who filled in Wednesday and held the Tigers to two runs in 5 1/3 innings, would start Monday if Paulino is unable to go. Adcock has made three spot starts this season.
